LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – UALR will celebrate spring  commencement Saturday, May 19, with the largest group of graduates in school history, including the first graduate of the new Ph.D. program in criminal
justice.

In addition, the UALR community will bid farewell to the first group
of 10 Rwandan students who came as UALR Presidential Scholars. They
are representatives of the country’s top high school graduates selected for the program that is helping the central African country rebuild its intellectual capital in the wake of its 1994 war and mass genocide.

The first ceremony at 9:30 a.m. in the Jack Stephens Center will include graduates of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; the College of Education; and the College of Professional Studies.

UALRTeach STEM initiative starts at UALR

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (May 7, 2012) – Educators in several UALR colleges are working together to recruit more science, technology, engineering, and mathematics  (STEM) undergraduate students into teacher prep programs so they can teach in these critical areas in public schools.

This UALR initiative got a boost last week when the Governor's Workforce Group selected UALR to receive $216,000 to support participation in the national UTeach program. Other state universities selected in the program were the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and University of Central Arkansas.

Dr. Michael Gealt, dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, and Dr. Angela Sewall, dean of the College of Education, worked with several UALR faculty in both of their colleges to write a grant proposal to the UTeach Institute to support the UALRTeach initiative on campus.

PCSSD sets summer school schedule

PCSSD sets summer school schedule

The Pulaski County Special School District (PCSSD) will hold two summer school sessions for high school and middle school students, according to Deborah Roush, the district’s spokesperson.

Summer school, which enables students who have failed a course to regain credit, will begin May 31, 2012. Middle school classes will include sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade math and English and English I, English II, English III, English IV, algebra I and geometry at the high school level, she said.

Registration for both sessions began May 1 and will continue until May 18 for the first session and until June 8 for the second session.  The cost is $80 per session for resident students (attending a PCSSD school) and $300 per session for non-resident students (not attending a PCSSD school).

Pulaski Technical College commencement set for May 10

Pulaski Technical College’s commencement will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock.

 More than 2,400 students are completing associate degrees, technical certificates and certificates of proficiency this academic year. Of those, nearly 600 students plan to participate in commencement exercises.

Toby Daughtery, a 2009 graduate of Pulaski Technical College and graduating senior at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, will deliver the commencement address. Daughtery delivered the first student address at the Achieving the Dream Strategy Institute conference last year and has become a sought-after speaker at colleges and universities throughout the nation. He grew up in North Little Rock and happily shares his story of how his troubled youth was transformed by his pursuit of education.

Forest Heights Middle School joins national 'Move Your Body Celebration 2012'

On Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 12:42 p.m., Forest Heights Middle School will be among more than 400 schools across the country that will unite and celebrate the first year anniversary of the national "Let's Move!" initiative, aimed at curbing childhood obesity, by dancing to Beyonce's "Move Your Body" routine.

Schools are creating videos to submit which will be edited with others to show the impact exercise can have on health. The videos will be presented to the White House to mark the event and in support of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! program.   Forest Heights Middle School was honored to perform last year when the campus participated in the kick-off Mrs.

Philander Smith College announces Dr. Johnny Moore as 13th President

LITTLE ROCK, AR (April 27, 2012) ---- The Philander Smith College board of trustees announced Friday that Dr. Johnny Moore has been chosen as the 13th president of the college.

A native of Old Washington, Ark., and a 1989 graduate of Philander Smith College, Moore currently serves as Executive Vice President-Student Affairs at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas.  

After earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Philander, Moore completed a master’s degree at Arkansas State University, and his doctorate in mathematics education at Florida Institute of Technology.  Moore served as Vice President of Student Affairs at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Fla., where he was a tenured professor before joining the administration.

Moore will replace Dr. Walter Kimbrough who has served as president of Philander Smith for the past seven years. 

Vote to send your school to the Summer Cereal Drive 'Cereal Bowl'

Voting by the public will begin online Friday, April 27 (4:30 a.m.) through Wednesday, May 2 (midnight). There will be one winner per division. Winners will be invited to the Cereal Bowl on May 4 and their videos will be highlighted on-air during the Cereal Bowl between 5 am and 7 am!
