130,000 pounds of food collected during Letter Carrier Food Drive

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- The Arkansas Foodbank is sorting through donations from the Letter Carrier Food Drive.

Postal workers across the area picked up food items on front steps and in mailboxes this past Saturday and collected more than 130,000 pounds of food this year for hungry Arkansans.

Rhonda Sanders, CEO of the Arkansas Foodbank , said they're thankful for the help from postal workers.

"It really warms your heart to realize that those postal workers, who it's their job to deliver mail on a Saturday, when most of us would like to be off of work... They actually extend their working day because they're stopping and picking up canned goods, and putting them in their vehicles and getting them to us," said Sanders.

According to Sanders, this is the largest single food drive they've ever had.

83-year-old displaced following fire

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - An overnight fire at Forest Place Apartments left several families without a place to call home.

"It was a frightening experience," Howard Eichenbaum recalled. "The next thing I heard was my neighbor across the hall pounding on my front door."

Panic set in for several residents at Forest Place Apartments when a fire started shortly after midnight on Thursday.

Some residents grabbed whatever they could in time to escape the burning flames and heavy smoke.

"Put some pants on, and then my smoke alarms in my apartment went off," another resident said. This man may have been able to get out quickly, but for 83-year-old Howard Eichenbaum, it was not that easy.

"All I heard was my neighbor pounding on my door," he said.
