AHTD awarded funding for 'Safe Routes to School' program

LITTLE ROCK (AHTD) - The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) has announced the award of funding to applicants for "Safe Routes to School" Program projects in Arkansas, according to AHTD Director Scott Bennett. The program is a 100 percent Federally-funded initiative of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU).

"This program is specifically directed toward enabling and encouraging students in Kindergarten through 8th grade to walk or bicycle to school," said Bennett. "We were overwhelmed with 52 applications seeking over $7.6 million during the fifth application period for this program. The Highway Commission was able to award approximately $2.0 million in funds toward 31 very deserving projects."

Hastings Trial Day 3: Emotional people in court not allowed back in

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Testimony began on the third day of the trial against a former Little Rock police officer accused of killing a teenager.

While on the stand, the prosecuting attorney showed images of the scene, where Josh Hastings is accused of killing Bobby Moore, Jr. last fall.

One of the exhibits, quite graphic, showed Moore slumped over in the driver's seat of the car; this caused several people to emotionally leave the courtroom. On Tuesday, Judge Wendell Griffen gave specific instructions that no one from the gallery would be permitted to leave the courtroom unless court was in recess or given permission by a bailiff.

According to the judge, the people who left the courtroom Wednesday caused a distraction and are not allowed to return to the courtroom for the duration of the trial.

'Ghost Hunters' TV show features Little Rock home

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Doors closing on their own, creeks and rumbles in the middle of the night--they are regular happenings in one Little Rock haunted home. Wednesday, the popular Syfy show 'Ghost Hunters' will explore who or what is causing the strange happenings.

"I guess about 125 years worth of families," suggested Amber Jones.

History can be found throughout her home built in 1892, but over the last few years, something more has begun to appear.

"We had a table, a small end table, that had started knocking against the wall periodically," Jones recalled.

After several odd incidents, her curiosity drove her to enlist the help of a ghost hunter, learning to take EVP recordings herself.

Day 2: Jury selected and sworn in for LR policeman's trial

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV/AP) - A judge has replaced one of the 12 jurors selected at the trial of a former Little Rock police officer charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of a burglary suspect. A prosecutor on Tuesday had raised questions about the man, who works for the city of Little Rock.

So far, the jury consists of three men, nine women, and two female alternates. None of the jurors are black.

Josh Hastings was fired after the death last August of Bobby Moore III. Hastings' trial opened this week in Pulaski County Circuit Court.

Hastings has said Moore tried to run him over as the officer checked a report that cars were being broken into at an apartment complex. Prosecutors say evidence did not support Hastings' recollection.
