Filming begins for AETN's Dreamland Ballroom documentary

The Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) was recently awarded a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and additional funds from the Moving Image Trust to produce a documentary about the Dreamland Ballroom in the historic Taborian Hall, home of Arkansas Flag and Banner, on Ninth Street in Little Rock.

Filming began in January and will run through the end of 2013.  Producer Mark Wilcken hopes to have a finished product by the summer of 2014, adding "This project has been in development for several years so it feels great to finally start production. The building and the Ballroom are filled with stories that I'm excited to uncover and share with the audience."

Arkansas Arts Center Children’s Theatre presents "James and the Giant Peach"

'James and the Giant Peach' takes the audience on an incredible journey when young orphan James escapes the clutches of his horrible Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker only to find an enormous peach growing in his yard containing talking insects. James, the wise Old-Green-Grasshopper and the pessimistic Earthworm begin a wild adventure to an unknown destination.

'James and the Giant Peach' is adapted by David Wood from the book by Roald Dahl. This production will be on stage April 26 - May 12.

Thea announces 2013 Creative Writing Scholarship Winners

The Thea Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of its 3rd annual Creative Writing Scholarship Competition for high school seniors, which were finalized by a panel of qualified judges at the Thea Center on Wednesday, February 13, 2013.  51 participants from across the state submitted short stories with a maximum of 1,000 words based on Thea Kay Leopoulos’s mixed media painting, Liberty (2001).  

The Thea Foundation is honored with the opportunity to award students talented in the writing field.  Thea recognizes the hard work put forth by each participant, and encourage every student to continue to pursue creativity in higher education and beyond.

Veterans Photography Display at MacArthur Museum

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. –  Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS) in collaboration with MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History is holding a reception to celebrate the photography of  veterans. It will be held on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. The photography will be on display from February 15 to May 15, 2013.

The photography will be exhibited on the “Arkansas Heroes” wall, an exhibit launched to recognize individuals from our city and state for their military service. The first honoree was Captain Anthony Riggan, United States Air Force, who tragically lost his life at the age of 25. The exhibit changes periodically to reflect stories, artifacts and images that tell the stories of Arkansas Veterans and their service to our state and our nation.

Gibbs Elementary Receives Valentine Surprise from Thea’s Art Closet

Thea’s Art Closet and Herron Horton Architects are showing off their “big hearts” this Valentine’s Day.  The Thea Foundation is happy to announce that Gibbs Elementary School of the Little Rock School District is receiving a donation of art supplies through these two partners’ mutual gift.  Herron Horton Architect’s donation plus the Art Closet’s matching grant comes to a total of $1,750 in art supplies for Gibbs.  

A brief ceremony to present the Thea’s Art Closet grant and honor the recipient school will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2013, beginning at 12:30pm in the cafeteria of Gibbs Elementary at 1115 W. 16th Street, Little Rock, Ark.  Administration, teachers and students from Gibbs, as well as Jennifer Herron and Jeff Horton of Herron Horton Architects will be in attendance.  Media representatives are encouraged to attend.

More than 60 students gather four times a week as members of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) Vesper Choir to practice their impressive vocals in preparation for performance. Directed by Dr. Michael Bates, interim chair for the Department of Music, the ensemble continues their schedule with appearances in Arkansas and abroad.

Organized in 1945 by Ariel M. Lovelace, the Vesper Choir is a service organization that has performed for significant campus and community events, schools, churches, and community organizations around the state of Arkansas and internationally. With a mission that is cultural, artistic and educational, the group has produced a long line of distinguished singers, performers and professionals in other work fields and academic including Dr. H. Beecher Hicks, prominent theologian, pastor and author; Smokie Norful, Grammy award-winning contemporary gospel artist and pastor; and Mr. James McKissic, internationally renowned concert pianist.
