Acclaimed doctor gives appearance at lunch

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Dr. David Lipschitz is set to appear Tuesday, Feb. 22 at the Grand Ballroom of DoubleTree Hotel for a lunch buffet at 11:30 a.m.

David A. Lipschitz, MD, PhD is the Executive Director of the Longevity Center at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center. Under his leadership, the Department of Geriatrics ranked second in the nation for research funding in aging by the National Institutes of Health and eighth in the nation by US News and World Report.

A native of South Africa, Dr. Lipschitz received both his MD and PhD from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. Dr. David, as he is affectionately known as by his patients and on television, is one of the best known geriatricians in the United States. Dr. Lipschitz has appeared on national television, including the “TODAY Show” and “CBS Sunday morning with Charles Osgood.”

Farmers Market conference serves fresh ideas

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The annual Certified Arkansas Farmers Market (CAFM) conference will be held in Little Rock this Saturday, February 26, at the Statehouse Convention Center.

This year, CAFM members have partnered with the 20th annual Arkansas Flower and Garden Show, the Arkansas Farmers Market Association and the Arkansas Food Policy Council; bringing together farmers, market managers, backyard gardeners and government officials to network and share ideas of interest that have an impact on our state agriculture.

CAFM activities kick off Saturday morning with registration from 7:15-8:00 at the Statehouse Convention Center.  All interested participants can register the morning of the conference.  Opening session begins at 8 a.m.

Little Rock gas prices rise almost 5 cents a gallon

Little Rock, February 21- Average retail gasoline prices in Little Rock have risen 4.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.00/g Sunday.

This compares with the national average that has increased 4.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.16/g, according to gasoline price website LittleRockGasPrices.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Little Rock during the past week, prices Sunday were 52.2 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 4.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 6.9 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 51.5 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

ESPN exec discusses fight against sexual assault

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Since escaping an attempted rape while on vacation in Italy in 2008, ESPN public relations executive Keri Potts has spoken out about sexual assault. Potts’ ordeal surrounding the attempted assault and her yearlong prosecution of her assailant has been chronicled by USA Today and Marie Claire magazine. She also launched her own blog, "A Fight Back Woman," and hopes to expand the knowledge about overseas prosecution of sexual assault.

Five honored in Agriculture Hall of Fame

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Five new inductees will be included in the Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame for their contributions to one of the state's largest economic engines. The class of 2010 will be honored March 11 at 11:30 am, at Little Rock's Embassy Suites Hotel.

The inductees are Don W. Alexander of Bryant (Saline County), Jerry L. Hall of Damascus (Van Buren County), Hugh D. McClain of Mountain Home (Baxter County), the late Dr. Teddy Morelock of Fayetteville (Washington County) and Dr. Milo J. Shult of Conway (Faulkner County).

Lignite coal mining meeting with Governor Beebe

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- A follow up to a THV Extra we brought you earlier this month on a proposal for lignite coal mining for Arkansas.

Today's THV showed you what they could look like at a Mississippi lignite mine.

Monday morning, lawmakers plan to meet with Governor Beebe in Little Rock to pitch the idea of similar operations in the southern part of the state and address some of the governor's environmental concerns.

Backers want to use the lignite for fuel for our cars, but they need $3 million approved by the state for commercial testing before going forward.

Monday's meeting is not open to the public.

Update: LR waiter accused of raping 7-year-old girl

Sunday there was no wait at Casa Manana. Regular customers reeling over Little Rock police's arrest of waiter Marco Gutierrez.

"For you to go into a restaurant that you think is safe and then you have the kids there with you and as a parent it's just alarming," says mom and customer Becca Willard.

Gutierrez is charged with raping a 7-year-old girl, who was eating at the mexican restaurant, on Highway 10, with family and friends.

"I did see something about an assault on a seven year old girl and I never imagined it was down the street. I live three miles from here so," says customer Laura Woodall.

Casa Manana Manager Desideiro Juarez says he's more surprised than anyone by the charges. "I don't even know what happened. To this day I still have questions about what happened. I was surprised that when I realized the charges were that grave," says Desideiro.
