Downtown LR Partnership hosts luncheon

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.  — The Downtown Little Rock Partnership is pleased to announce that the keynote speaker for its Annual Luncheon on Thursday, March 17, 2011 will be Fred Kent.

Kent, as founder and president of Project for Public Spaces (PPS) in New York City, is a leading authority on revitalizing city spaces, called “Placemaking,” and is considered one of the foremost thinkers in livability, smart growth and the future of the city.

Sharon Priest, executive director of the Downtown Little Rock Partnership (DLRP), said, “We are delighted that Fred Kent has chosen to join us for our Annual Luncheon this year. As we look at those among us who are ‘architects’ of downtown Little Rock, we recognize the value to downtown of those who have understood his concept of turning spaces into places as well as its importance as we go forward.”

Murder suspect turns himself in to police

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - A man suspected of murder turns himself in to police.

On Feb. 12 at approximately 12:46 a.m. officers responded to a shooting at 3325 Roosevelt. When they arrived they found Victor Wilkerson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Wilkerson was transported to UAMS where he died as a result of his injuries.

Several witnesses were found and taken to the Downtown Detective Division where they were interviewed by homicide detectives. From there detectives were able to develop a suspect, Danny Joe Lewis.

Then, a first degree murder warrant was obtained for Lewis.

Wednesday, Lewis turned himself in to police. He was accompanied by his attorney. He was transported to the Pulaski County Detention Facility and is being held on $75,000 bail and a hold for the U.S. Marshal.

Poker champ wins $148K, gold ring, Vegas spot

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Sam Barnhart, a software analyst for the Arkansas Department of Education, is the winner of the Harrah’s Tunica World Series of Poker Circuit Main Event.

For his win, Barnhart took home $148,612, the coveted diamond-encrusted WSOPC Main Event ring and an automatic seat into the WSOPC National Championship to be held in May at Caesars Palace.

Barnhart, who lives in nearby Little Rock, AR is a long-time cash game player in Tunica and a regular in the 20-40 limit hold’em game at the Horseshoe just a couple of miles up the road.

Barnhart’s table mates over at the Horseshoe poker room followed his progress throughout the day on Pokernews.com.

Smyly excited for spring training

A year ago Drew Smyly was preparing for his redshirt sophmore season with the Razorbacks.  Now Smyly is packing for his first spring training with the Detroit Tigers.

Smyly leaves Thursday for Florida.  The Tigers selected Smyly in the second round of the MLB Draft.  Smyly had a big season pitching for the Razorbacks on the weekends in the SEC.

Now Smyly is hoping that experience pays off in the minor leagues.

Update: No bomb found at Pavilion in the Park

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- A suspicious package found at Pavilion in the Park in west Little Rock is not a bomb.

The Little Rock Fire Department and the bomb squad arrived and x-rayed the bag and saw wired that looked suspicious, so they detonated the bag.

Inside the bag turned out to be a laptop computer with some other electronic equipment and not a bomb.

A Centennial Bank employee called Little Rock Police around noon to report a suspicious black bag in the park.  The employee said it had been there all morning.

The building was evacuated for more than an hour, but employees were recalled back to the building after the package was cleared.

Homeschoolers show goodwill to state legislators

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Homeschoolers from all over Arkansas will converge at the State Capitol today at 9 a.m. to put their best homeschooling foot forward.

It's all in celebration of Home School Day.

Pedestrian killed on Baptist Medical Center Campus

Baptist Medical Center employee Cynthia Frazier died Tuesday morning after being hit by another employee.  It happened on Emergency Drive and Kanis Road.

 

Little Rock Police got the call around 6:30 a.m., that Cassandra Johnson had hit Frazier with her 2003 Ford Explorer.

 

Sgt. Cassandra Davis says it appears to be an accident, nothing malicious or intentional.  She does not know if the women knew each other.

She says charges could come pending the outcome of the investigation, but right now, Johnson is not charged.
